Scarlett

Scarlett

Scarlett is a sofa which is also a chaise-lounge, a welcoming and comfortable nest. The Scarlett steals the show, its eye-catching circular form an invitation to relax. A project very much in line with Jean-Marie Massaud’s style, the Scarlett combines architectural geometries with full and soft volumes.

The piece is surrounded by a brushed and burnished steel ring which supports a system of Cuoio Saddle Extra leather straps. The straps create a frame which functions both as a backrest and armrest in an elegant lattice which hosts the padded goose down and polyurethane foam seat. Goose down is also used in the backrest cushions, which in turn are liberally covered with loose square and rectangular cushions. All of the cushions are upholstered in fabric or Pelle Frau® leather. The seat’s frame is made of solid beech wood. The Scarlett also features eight castors which allow the sofa to rotate through 360°.

Mesa Due Meeting Table

Mesa Due Meeting Table

Mesa is a project by Lella & Massimo Vignelli from 1985. The concept of the table in its sculptural essentiality. This fertile matrix of developments has been drawn on by Poltrona Frau to create a continually expanding and transversal collection.

Mesa Due Meeting Table is the new version for workspaces. It combines sophisticated materials, technological performance and flexible design. A system of rectangular or oval meeting tables. The top is made up of several panels and can therefore be expanded to various lengths. The number of legs can be increased to accommodate the size. All the tables can be integrated with cablemanagement systems and lift-up central panels for easy access to the electrical parts. The top with double MDF panelling is entirely covered in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System. The frame supporting the top is in black-painted iron.

The steel support column, stabilised by a counterweight system is covered in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System with tone-on-tone stitching or in Cuoio Saddle Extra Leather with contrasting stitching. The collection also includes new variants of the Mesa Due round table. Both the 120 and 150 diameters are perfect as an elegant table for small meetings. The steel base, covered in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System or in Cuoio Saddle Extra Leather, can now be fitted with a hidden cable column. The ash top is available in a moka- or wengestained finish. A base is also available in pietra serena, in line with the original Mesa project.

Mesa Due

Mesa Due

Poltrona Frau has been carrying out an interesting philological work around the Mesa project. Based on original designs by Lella & Massimo Vignelli, it has been developed two new evocative versions of the table, The coming together of two simple geometric shapes, a circle and a cone. The table’s possible uses have expanded with the different sizes of top that now accompany the 135 cm diameter model with its slate top and supporting column in Pietra Serena stone: the 150 cm diameter dining table and the 120 cm diameter bistro table.

The top is made from MDF in a wenge stained ash wood veneer. There are two versions of the base: Pietra Serena stone or steel covered in Cuoio Saddle Extra leather with contrast stitching and Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System with tone-on-tone stitching. A special system of internal counterweights stabilise the steel base.

Lyra

Lyra

Lyra made its debut as a full leather article in Poltrona Frau’s catalogue of 1934, as a variant of Lira, an earlier model (from 1916) that had a velvet cushion. The 1934 replica still sported a rounded seatback and finishing by means of a row of leather-covered nails, which were the formal traits of Victorian living room furniture, combined with the other comfort-making features of these armchairs: deep seat, comfortable arms, a plush cushion filled with goose down.

The padding of rubberised horsehair is applied by hand onto the biconic steel springs of the seat and back springing. The structure is made of seasoned beech wood. Upholstery is available in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System, in Heritage and in Soul leather. The upholstery is also available in Pelle Frau® leather from the Color System or Heritage leather for the structure and in fabric for the seat cushions.

Ming’s Heart

Ming’s Heart

East and West. The Ming’s Heart project goes straight to the core of two worlds, two visions, two philosophies of life and living. Shi-Chieh Lu, a Taiwan based architect and designer, won the prestigious Taiwan Design Contest promoted by Poltrona Frau and Euchain Ltd., a long-established Taiwanese dealer. This contest aims to encourage the cultural exchange between East and West, between the values underlying the idea of design in Taiwan and Poltrona Frau identity. The historic Ming chair is the reference model for this piece by Shi-Chieh Lu.

The purity of its lines, the perfect expression of Chinese and Oriental spirituality, reverberates in the geometric and cubic formality of the Western vision. Shi-Chieh Lu pares down surfaces until he achieves a continuous line. Armrests, seat and back become the lightest of fluid, graphic shapes. The profile is made from tubular steel. Weight and gravity are no longer determined by the lower part of the structure, but by the top from which the seat hangs.

The shell is a continuous surface, a sort of triangle made from thin steel sheet, completely covered in saddle-leather. Its ends are fixed to the tubes with visible screws. The final result is a chair that floats in space, almost like a futuristic swing or a conceptual sculpture. Lightly padded in polyurethane foam, thicker on the seat and lumbar cushion, the shell is upholstered in Cuoio Saddle Extra leather, with visible contrasting hand-stitching. Gunmetal grey galvanic treatment for the steel tubes creates an even more ethereal effect.

Mesa

Mesa

Mesa is a sculpted, almost primitive table, this icon of formal purity was first designed in 1985 by Lella and Massimo Vignelli and has now been revisited by Poltrona Frau. Mesa table combines the two simple geometric shapes of a circle and a cone.

The top is composed of Ligurian slate which, thanks to the traditional splitting technique, retains the rock’s natural grooves and lines on the surface. The supporting column is made from grey Pietra Serena sandstone. The overall effect is a physical monolith which is solid and compact yet light at the same time.

The junction between the table top and the column is formed of tubular burnished steel and is mounted with three brackets whose adjustable spacers make it possible to change the position of the top.
A burnished sheet steel surface base gives the surface additional stability and strength, whilst the base of the stone support is finished with a shaped tip of black plastic.
